A career is well begun with an engineering degree. It is a degree that develops various skills and also enhances one's thinking capabilities. But time management is an important factor to be maintained while pursuing or to complete the degree in a graceful way.

" Time management is Life Management"
                                                                                         - Robin Sharma
It is recorded that engineering students are likely to face more stress and frustration which gradually results in bad health issues and further complications. Engineering students face stress during submissions, exam or last minute project work due to the improper time management methods. Also some of the engineering students tend to go for some kind of part time job or workshops. To maintain a right balance between all these tasks is very essential.
Time management enables one to follow the schedule in a proper way in order to complete it well on time. It also frees stress and makes one's mind positive and healthy. One can arrange the tasks according to its priorities and be on track before submissions or exam period. Proper time management not only makes room for academics but also extracurricular activities .
" All time management begins with planning".
                                                                                                                  - Tom Greening.
A few Time Management tips :
  • Make a check list
A check list of all the things to do is a must for improving one's time management. It is only then a clear picture of all the tasks to be done will bring an idea of how much time each task will take.
  • Organize a schedule
Organizing a schedule such as pinning up a time table or a reminder in cell phones will enable one to keep a track of all the priority tasks to be done and also will keep one alert or updated.
  • Keep yourself away from any kind of distraction
To chose the right place to study is very essential. A research should be made about  all the places that can reward utmost peace, comfort and concentration.
  • Prioritize the important tasks in the schedule

Alive and Well Campus Life….

A campus defines a college. A walk in and around the campus rejuvenates a feeling of how the college is really like. It is a place or set down where universities ,colleges and recognized buildings are found. A campus includes various infrastructures such as libraries, amphitheater ,  lecture halls, cafeteria, conference hall, parking arena etc. Each colleges have their own vivid campus with immense facilities.

The key factor to judge a college is its campus and the right way to know more about the college is personally conducting a visit.  To make a quick visit to all the colleges may not be practical but it’s ideal to make trips and know more about the colleges. A campus visit answers all the prolonged questions that a catalogue, website or brochure can’t explain. It is essential to get an answer for the questions that is jotted down. For instance a visit renders the chance to take reviews from the students about various activities such as teaching faculties, courses, hostel facilities etc.

One can also find detailed information about admissions and other financial related issues. An overview about the classroom infrastructure such as its average size, teacher-student ratio, professors, non teaching staffs etc can be obtained. Parents are always conscious about the welfare of their child. Thus a visit gives them an understanding as well as takes away their worries regarding meal facilities, diversity , social or cultural activities etc.
Safety is another important aspect that worries all. Everyone agrees to the term that safety is priority. When applying to a new University one would expect that the University is safe to study and doesn’t have any bad reputations in the past. Safety on campus is an important issue and needs careful attention. Parents are concerned about many things when their children are off to a new learning campus, especially when they are away from their guard. Campus safety is extremely vital in making these life decisions. Proper security services for day as well as for the night should be provided by the colleges. A safer environment encourages more students to be a part of that institution.
  • It is always good to maintain a Campus Visit Checklist
  1. Gather Information.
Find out details about how to apply or seek admission in the college.
  • It is good to be part of group information session at the admission office.
  • An interview with an admission officer renders information about all the formalities .

Distinct Education – an aid for Engineering

India is a diverse and democratic country and is also advancing in global technologies. This increased in the number of engineering graduates across the states. In India, most of the students wish to enroll for engineering courses after their higher secondary education. A great demand arises among the students to reserve a seat in well-known institutions; as they have spend a lot of money and their valuable time to prepare for the entrance examinations. But only a few students are able to crack the exams and get into renowned institutions as per their desire. This became an advantage for emerging engineering colleges as well as students. It was beneficial for students because they could still pursue their dream to be an engineer by enrolling into these colleges. Insufficient knowledge about the fact of ‘engineering’ and their respective field deprives the growth of eminent engineers with minimal employability skills. People have misconception regarding engineers. They think engineers ought to be “super-humans” who can build several gadgets like rockets, robots, electric vehicles etc. The reason following this misconception is that when an emerging engineer is working on a project based on satellites, people conclude his versatility in knowing every minute detail about the satellites. In reality, complete details of the projects are not known by any engineer. For example, to design an electric car people from different streams such as electrical, mechanical, chemical engineering etc. are required.
Engineering college is a place where future engineers are nurtured. But it’s a misconception that drives people to think engineering colleges are build up with business point of view.  As an engineer, student or aspirant, we all know that unless an engineering college, course and seats are certified by AICTE, they are not valid. Engineering colleges are in great demand as they sharpen the skills of the students making them a potent asset for India. Engineering colleges are still the flame of development of Indian economy. Hence they must be peculiar such that the students passing out from any institute should have unified knowledge towards their particular subject and acuteness to perform some epic contribution towards their workplaces. Rather than increasing the quantity we must focus on the quality. Even after pursuing BE, students are clueless about their carrier.

An enormous increase in colleges indirectly impacts the quality of education and depletes the number of jobs in the industries. Quality education must be rendered with respect to practical knowledge rather than theoretical aspects.
The primary objective of engineering education is to give good intuitive basic and analytical skills. The Engineering stream increases the ability of gaining capital by creating assets. Education has to be delivered with quality so that innovative ideas emerging from the engineering graduates could develop the economic growth of the country. Engineering colleges can maintain their quality in varied ways. There are many private engineering colleges who are contributing standard education in quality environment. It is important for such institutions to bring out the best in students because it is basically the results and the quality of the students that will form the criteria for judging the credibility of such colleges.
Technical challenges that will encounter in future require highly skilled engineers, and our educational system needs to train students who can do their best.

Following improvements are needed in engineering education to improve the Quality.

1.Develop elementary as well as secondary school education to students to succeed in engineering school. This should comprise classes that will cultivate engineering skills at an early stage.
2.Having the right kind of education is important. Great improvements need to be made by improving the quality and relevance of these courses. Concentrating on the key areas where one could be educated to understand and make good decisions.
3.Part of the engineering curriculum should be adjusted for betterment of students.
Statistics, problem solving, safety and basic business acumen are key areas in which every engineer should be experienced.
4.Public relations are important.
This will teach people about the value of engineering, the roles that engineers play in this world and the opportunities that exist for engineers may help many to be inspired to become engineers.

All engineering institutions need to be better, and find ways to help others meet higher standards.

Significance of Training and Placement Cell in Engineering Colleges

In today’s education system, we can see a significant skill gap. Out of the lot 80% of the engineering graduates are unemployed, and hence a need for an upgraded education system arises. Most of the graduated students look out for jobs either in software or core engineering fields, but only few are able to fulfill the requisite according to the desired skills. In today’s world, engineering has become one of the common graduation degrees among en number of students. One can find every second person as an aspiring engineer.  In spite of, improving the educational standards, it is more essential to evolve some undergraduate programs to make the folks more job-centric. Considering all the cities, Pune still continues to produce the highest number of engineers. The primary reasons for such poor job scopes or opportunities include an inadequate knowledge about the domain area, the inability to relate basic concepts and principles applied in the fields of computer or mechanical engineering to real-world problems etc. There is a vivid gap in the culture taught and learned by majority of institutes even though the concepts and principles exist in the curriculum designed for colleges. In such situations Campus placement plays a vital role. It fulfills the gap by giving right opportunity to the students. A job suitable to one’s profile is handed over. Campus placement is the program conducted by training and placement cell of every engineering institute to provide jobs to students appearing their final year of engineering. In this program, various industries visit the colleges and select the students based on their skills, academic records, determination, focus and their aim.

Training and placement cell is an integral part of every institute. The cell is sensitized to function throughout the year for generating placements and training opportunities for the students. They also provide different soft and hard skills training to the students during vacation and also during regular college hours. Campus placement hence should be on top of every student’s checklist before considering any Engineering Institute. Shree Ramchandra College of Engineering is one of the best colleges in Wagholi, Pune. SRCOE has also build training and placement cell, as it resembles the mirror or face of any instituteA student seeking admission in any college, first tries to find out the placement assistance that the other students have received in the past.  The higher the number of placements, the better the college and it would be the best for students facing the present competitive world. But only a few colleges succeed in attracting renowned companies for campus drive in their respective colleges, and hence such colleges have more advantages over the others.
The ultimate aim of Training & Placement Cell in SRCOE is to provide employment opportunities and world class training to Students in Leading Organizations. The Cell is well equipped with ample infrastructure such as testing halls, consultancy hall etc. for activities like Pre Placement Talk, Presentations and Group discussion etc. Training and Placement cell is an apt place to be in touch with from an industrial point of view. It is also very useful for industries that are willing to recruit fresher’s.  The range of activities which the industry wants to take up from an institute directly depends on the active role of Training and Placement officer and his team. More energetic and vibrant the Officer, the more energetic and vibrant would be the placement cell. Asst. Prof.Sneha Deshmukh is the Training and Placement officer at SRCOE.

Following are the functions done by the Training and Placement cell

  • ·        To assist the development and maintenance of the database of every student.
  • ·   Prepare the student’s database with all relevant information such as Personal details, Academic details, Achievement, extra skills set etc.
  • ·        Guide students to prepare their Resume and maintains a separate file for resumes in both soft as well as hard copy with required certificates.
  • ·     A list of companies / organizations with brief profile, address, contact details of concerned HR person etc to be maintained.
  • ·        To invite promising companies to campus for recruitment.
  • ·        Conduct regular soft and hard skill sessions for the students.
  • ·        Conduct aptitude practice test for students.
  • ·         Conduct personality development programs and career counseling programs for students.
  • ·        Arranging industrial visits for students & faculties at reputed industries.
  • ·       Taking regular feedback from industries about the performance of the students and department and find out the weaknesses in  students

The cell also arranges training programs at various reputed industries like Maruti Udyog Ltd., L&T, Havells, DRDO, CSIO, Ericsson, Siemens, Reliance Group, HCL, Samsung, LG etc. The training programs are held at the end of 4th semester. Training is of 4 weeks and by the end of 6th - 8th semester, the training increases up to 6 weeks. The students act as a channel of communication with the industries. It also encourages students to participate in technical paper presentation that are held in collaboration with various industries so that, students can discuss about new developments and trends in market. Training and placement cell enables students to get the right job at the right time and also at the right place.

Why Time Management is Important to get Best Engineering College

Engineering aspirants make a banging start in colleges when they are highly excited, enthusiastic and bubbling with energy. They are happy to have cracked the stringent admission procedure and finally climbing the first step of their chosen dream career. Most of them feel as if they are half engineers already by passing the entrance test and procuring a seat. They take the initial months of the first year of their degree course easily, and proceed at a leisurely speed. It takes time to settle down to the new routine, hostel life, the college campus, new teachers and friends, formalities and rules and regulations of the institution. Before the students find solid ground beneath their feet, they realize that they are immersed in projects, assignments and tests. The syllabus is well under way and the semester exams are close. They are at a loss to decide on priorities, leading to confusion and frustration. The clock cannot be reverted; hence it is extremely important to manage time wisely and discretely from the very first day of the engineering course.
Engineering course is a demanding course as far as both efforts and time are concerned. The theory part is difficult and understanding concepts is important. Since it is a practice-oriented branch of studies, it has no value without practical work. Students are required to get hands-on experience in workshops, attend seminars, go on industry visits and complete internship in the industrial sector. All this requires a lot of time. Students remain engaged from morning to evening in college activities. There is little time left for self-study and entertainment. If students do not take care and plan a proper time schedule, they may end up spoiling future prospects in spite of spending large amounts of money and 3 to 4 prime years of their life.
Excluding college hours, time has to be planned for the following:
·        Self-study and revision – Whatever is taught in the classroom must be revised regularly for better understanding and fixation.
·        Sleep and rest – When one has to work throughout the day, enough time must be reserved for rest and sleep. Lack of proper sleep may affect the health of students.
·        Recreation and entertainment –Man cannot work like a machine. To keep the brain active and charged, some kind of entertainment is crucial. Students can go for an outing or watch a movie when they have prolonged holidays for 2 to 3 days continuously. Reading, playing indoor games, listening to music for some time etc.  are other forms of recreation.
·        Social activities: mixing with friends, visiting relatives, an occasional visit to meet family members can be scheduled for longer vacations. Students must participate in festivals and celebrations in the college to remain socially active.
·        Cultural activities/competitions –students must participate in all cultural events and competitions organized by the college.
·        Exercise – Regular exercise is the key to physical health. Young students who join the engineering course must take some kind of exercise daily, early in the morning or evening, whenever they find it convenient. They can go for a walk, join a gym or play some outdoor game that they are interested in.
Wisdom lies in time management. ONLY with proper time management, you can do real justice to the engineering course and achieve what you set out to achieve in the prime period in life. Time management alone can lead to success in every sphere of life in the modern age of competition, deadlines, targets and workloads.
At S. R. College ofEngineering, students get all kinds of facilities for reading, sports, gym, competitions and cultural activities. Every facility is provided on campus. Students can study and enjoy college life by achieving a fine balance of career and holistic development.

Factors that need to be checked before joining an engineering college

top-15-mistakes-to-avoid-in-choosing-a-college
Students who seek admissions to engineering colleges have a difficult time choosing an appropriate college. Although the syllabus for all courses is the same across all colleges affiliated to a particular university, the college where you study makes a great difference. Some students do not know which criteria should be applied for choosing the right engineering college. They may join a college odd reasons – may be because their parents studied in that college, because their friends have joined the college, because a college is at a convenient distance for commutation and various other reasons. Can you take the important decision of joining a college for one of these reasons? When you are looking for a college which is going to be your alma mater, you have more serious issues to consider.
Affiliation: To which university is the college affiliated? This information is available on the internet.
Approval: An engineering college must be approved by AICTE ( All India Council for Technical Education). A college approved by AICTE has to follow certain norms with respect to admissions, qualifications of faculty, infrastructure and fee structure.
Expenses: Before joining an engineering college, the total expenditure for the entire course must be taken into account. If you are going to live far from home in a hostel, then you will have to pay for lodging and boarding in addition to tuition fees, books, stationary and other things. Check whether you can afford the expenses before joining the college.
Faculty: Check the merits of the staff. The teachers in the engineering college must be duly qualified and highly experienced.
Infrastructure: An engineering course is practice oriented. Classroom teaching and theory must be complemented by practical work. A good engineering college must have workshops and laboratories.
Library: Higher education is research oriented. A well-equipped library with sufficient number of text books and reference books is essential.

Discipline and general atmosphere: An engineering college must have a disciplinary code, anti-ragging law enforcement, women’s cell etc. all these factors contribute to the general atmosphere in the college and make it conducive for learning.
Hostel facility: The College must provide good hostel facility. Students are required to spend 3 to 4 years in the college. Hence the food provided to hostelites must be nourishing and enough.
Sports and cultural activities: Even though the engineering course is demanding, students must be given opportunity for indulging in sports and cultural activities for promotion of holistic development. The college must conduct and participate in sports events and competitions.
Transport facilities: For students who are day-scholars, there must be adequate transport facility.
Seminars and conferences: Engineering colleges must organize seminars and conferences at various levels and encourage students to participate and present papers.
Industry interface: Good engineering colleges must have association and tie-ups with MNCs. Students can be placed in the companies for internship. The college must invite guest lecturers from companies to guide the students.
Placements: a good engineering college must provide job training, interview skills, communication skills and PD training and support students for campus placements in deserving positions.

Why practical knowledge is more important than theoretical knowledge?

Can you imagine someone teaching you to swim or drive a vehicle, within four walls of a classroom? It is impossible!! You have to get into the water to learn swimming and you have to be out on the road to learn driving. Some subjects are skill based and practice oriented. Theoretical knowledge of skill- based subjects needs to be supported by practice. Subjects like teaching and engineering are skill based. In these subjects, practical knowledge is more important than theoretical knowledge.Practical work includes experiments in laboratories, study tours, projects, assignments etc. the advantages of practical work are unmatched. Getting theoretical knowledge has no value until students can apply it for practical purposes.

  • When you do something with your own hands you remember better.
  • Practical work promotes experiential learning.
  • Practical work encourages self-learning.
  • Practical work familiarizes students with tools and equipment that he will be required to use.
  • Practice leads to perfection.
  • One cannot become an expert overnight; greater the practice, greater the expertise.
  • Practical work is a good change from the monotonous lecture method.
  • Students are required to participate actively in practical activities.
  • Involvement of students is more in practical work.
  • Practical work complements theory.
  • Practical assignments are often carried out in groups. Group work helps to inculcate social values and values like sharing, cooperation, team spirit, compassion etc.
  • Practical work makes students independent and increases their confidence.
Students who complete engineering education often find that when they start working, they are at a loss in spite of getting very good marks in the examination. If the engineering colleges in pune integrates theory with practice, students are better prepared for jobs. Practical knowledge in advance boosts their confidence.
Hence, there are several benefits of practical work. At the same time it must be remembered that theoretical knowledge is also important. Practical work is application of theory. Theory creates a strong base for practical work.  One must be able to achieve a balance between theory and practice for best results. Theory and practice are two sides of the same coin.
I would like to end with a funny anecdote. One Mr. X had a master’s degree in automobile engineering and worked on a high post in a reputed organization. One day, on his way to the office, his car stopped working and he got off to investigate the problem. With his high qualification and expertise in the area, he examined each part of the car carefully but couldn’t find any fault. After a while, a peasant who was passing asked him, “What’s the matter?”
He answered, “Well, something is wrong with the car.”
The peasant replied,” Did you check the tank? Perhaps there is no petrol.”
The peasant was right.
This is what might happen when theoretical knowledge is not supported by practical knowledge.
